Dr. Kwong joined the Southern Research in July 1983 as a Research Chemist in the Polymer Engineering Section, participating in projects directed toward the development and synthesis of polymeric materials used in biodegradable and controlled release matrices and formulations. In August 1985, Dr. Kwong joined the Biotechnology Division where he worked on the development of new hydrolyzing enzymes and decontaminating foam systems for substrates exposed to certain chemicals and chemical formulations. He also contributed to projects directed toward the development of passive systems for chemical detection and to the synthesis of catalytic glycoprotein formulations for prophylaxis against chemical intoxication.
Since joining the Medicinal Chemistry Department in 1986, he has been a key contributor or principal investigator for a number of government and industry-sponsored projects directed toward the development and synthesis of new compounds, usually nucleoside analogs, as potential antiviral and anti-infective agents. He is one of five Southern Research medicinal chemists participating in NIAID- and FDA-sponsored compound acquisition programs directed toward the discovery and development of new antibacterial and antiviral agents. He has also directed and provided contact synthesis services to a number of government and industry sponsors.
