Karl-Heinz Braunewell to Lead Southern Research Institute's New Molecular and Cellular Neuroscience Program

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. (July 9, 2007) - Southern Research Institute today announced that Karl-Heinz Braunewell, Ph.D. has joined the company's highly successful drug discovery team to lead efforts which will expand Southern Research's drug discovery initiatives in neuroscience.

As the head of Southern Research's newly created Molecular and Cellular Neuroscience Laboratory, Dr. Braunewell will concentrate on drug discovery for targets in brain cancer and several neurological disorders including Alzheimer's disease, addiction, epilepsy, pain and schizophrenia.

"Dr. Braunewell's significant research experience, especially in neuronal calcium sensors, is a great complement to our neuroscience program, and allows us to continue to expand our drug discovery research capabilities in this specific area," said William B. Parker, Ph.D., director of Biochemistry and Molecular Biology at Southern Research. "He is a great addition to our department."

Most recently, Dr. Braunewell led the Signal Transduction Research group at the Neuroscience Research Center, and was a lecturer at the Johannes Müller-Institute for Physiology of the Charité, Berlin.

Southern Research made its first investment to develop a neuroscience program to complement its programs in cancer and infectious disease research two years ago with the appointment of Dr. Maurizio Grimaldi from the National Institutes for Health.
