Thermochemical Conversion

Biomass Gasification

Conversion of biomass resources to liquid transportation fuels, syngas, and chemicals has received increasing emphasis and investment from advanced economies worldwide seeking alternative resources to fossil fuels. The recent development of the biorefining industry to accelerate replacement of petroleum transportation fuels with biofuels has provided further impetus for research and development in this field.

Southern Research has more than 30 years of experience in gasification, pyrolysis, and related technologies, and we currently operate one the first fully integrated biorefineries in the world. Our research scientists and engineers work with commercial and government clients to develop biomass and biomass-coal technology and it various subsystems. Our diverse capabilities include:

  • Operation, data collection, and performance evaluation of a four-ton-per-day biomass gasification PDU, including a fully integrated gas cleaning and gas-to-liquid system
  • Testing and evaluation of feeder system for co-feeding of biomass and coal to high-pressure gasifiers
  • Development, design, construction, and testing of a unique technology for removal of multi-contaminants, including tars
  • Pre-screening and evaluation of various biomass feedstocks, including biomass and biomass-coal mixtures in a laboratory-scale gasifier
  • Design, engineering, and construction of a PDU for gasification of MSW
