Syngas Cleaning

Syngas Scrubbing

Southern Research offers broad and in-depth expertise in syngas scrubbing technology research, development, and demonstration. Our diverse capabilities include scrubbing using caustic solutions, organic oils, and solvents to remove CO2 sulfur compounds, ammonia, and tars from raw syngas or fuel gas. We have gained extensive experience in this specialized area through our work on a variety of process development units for thermal and chemical conversion of biomass to F-T liquids, including diesel and mixed alcohols.

Our syngas scrubbing processes, when combined with conventional downstream polishing processes, meet the stringent syngas contaminant limits required to protect the catalysts used in Fisher-Tropsch and other syngas conversion technologies for liquid fuels, fuel additives, and chemicals such as diesel, jet fuels, alcohols, DME, and hydrogen production. Southern Research utilizes a variety of chemical and physical test methods to characterize the performance of syngas scrubbing technology. Routine analyses performed on site include: caustic pH, percent solids, and tar concentration and composition in oil. In addition, we offer the capability to perform several test methods requiring specialized equipment (e.g., total mercury and mist eliminator performance) to assist with problem solving or system performance optimization.
