Pre-Combustion CO2 Capture

Southern Research provides on-site technical support in pre-combustion CO₂ capture for the ongoing research efforts of Southern Company and the Department of Energy at the National Carbon Capture Center in Wilsonville, AL. This work has enabled us to develop significant expertise related to pre-combustion CO₂ capture, including:

• Capture of CO₂ and H₂S from synthesis gas using aqueous ammonia, amino acid salts, hot potassium carbonate, and various other solvents
• Development and application of various analytical techniques to determine the carbon and sulfur species formed during absorption and thermal regeneration of CO₂ capture solvents under pressure
• Laboratory screening of solvents to evaluate their relative CO₂ collection efficiencies, reaction rates, and capacities
