In Situ Particle Size Distribution

Accurate particle size distribution information is necessary in order to access or predict the performance of electrostatic precipitators. These data can only be obtained by measurement in the ESP inlet flue gas stream using inertial particle sizing devices, such as the cascade impactor. Southern Research has developed the standard sampling strategy for using cascade impactors and has also developed the software package, CIDRS, which is used worldwide in data reduction for these instruments.

Testing Methodology/Benefits

Southern Research has conducted hundreds of measurements using cascade impactors; we have also utilized the series cyclone, which was developed at Southern Research. Currently, we are developing an approved laboratory method to substitute for in situ measurement of particle size distributions for some types of sources. Where applicable, this novel method will significantly reduce the cost of obtaining accurate particle size measurements. Testing to date has demonstrated this laboratory option can be a viable technique for accurate particle size determination. An isokinetically collected ash sample must be used.
