Michael D. Johns

Michael Johns was named Vice President of the Engineering Division in 2004 and has more than eight years of engineering management experience at Southern Research. Johns has led and managed numerous high-profile research and commercial projects, including problem solving and process optimization of space shuttle materials for NASA. He now leads teams of scientists and engineers in thermal and structural behaviors of advanced composite materials, advanced material processing techniques, environment and energy research for clean energy technologies, electro-mechanical systems and integration, automotive engineering and computational sciences.

Johns has a Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical Engineering from The University of Alabama, and a Master’s degree in Business Administration from The University of Alabama. Johns serves on the Engineering leadership boards of The University of Alabama and The University of Alabama at Birmingham. Johns is also a founding member and current treasurer of the Society of Automotive Engineers Alabama Section.
